Understanding

What is Node.js?

Node.js is a runtime environment that runs JavaScript outside the browser, on a server. Its technical particularity: it handles many requests in parallel without one slow request blocking the others, which suits a back end queried continuously by several applications. Node.js produces no screen at all; it exposes data and logic consumed elsewhere, by your website, your mobile application, your internal tools. For your project, that means a back end in the same language as your interfaces if they are in React or Next.js.

What is Node.js used for?

Node.js is used to build the API that links your different interfaces together, to synchronise data between several business systems, and to handle real-time functions such as notifications or live tracking. It loses its appeal for work that is intensive in pure computation — image, video, heavy mathematical models — where a language designed for that kind of load does better. For most of the web and mobile projects we run, Node.js remains the default choice.

Use cases

What we develop with Node.js

Back ends and APIs we regularly build in Node.js to link your tools together.

API for a mobile application

We develop the Node.js API that acts as a shared foundation for your website and your Flutter or React Native application, so that both display the same data without duplicating the business logic from one system to the other.

E-commerce synchronisation

We develop connectors that synchronise catalogue, stock and orders between your site, your till and your management tools, to remove the discrepancies between the different sales systems over the course of the day.

Real-time booking

We develop booking systems that update availability across several channels at once, so that the same slot is never booked twice by different users at the same moment.

File synchronisation

We develop APIs that move files between several business tools used by field and office teams, with access management adjusted to each user's role.

API for sensitive data

We develop APIs for organisations handling sensitive data, with strengthened authentication, access logging and an architecture designed to meet the security requirements specific to your sector.

Connected equipment collection

We develop back ends that continuously collect data from connected equipment on an industrial site, to centralise it and make it viewable live from a single dashboard, rather than scattered across several manufacturer interfaces.

Ecosystem

The technologies that pair well with Node.js

Node.js never displays anything itself: it feeds the interfaces we build elsewhere. On the web side, it acts as the back end for Next.js sites and React interfaces. On the mobile side, it runs the applications we develop in Flutter or React Native. In all three cases, the same language, JavaScript, flows from front to back, which avoids translation round trips between teams and simplifies maintenance once the project is delivered.

Our expertise

Node.js agency for your APIs and back ends

We design APIs and back ends in Node.js to connect your applications, synchronise your business tools and handle real-time exchanges: scoping the data flows, development, load and security testing, then progressive deployment through to production release.

Why Node.js rather than another environment?

Node.js handles many connections in parallel without one slow request blocking the others, which suits an API queried by several applications: website, mobile application, internal tools. The same JavaScript language flows from front to back, which simplifies coordination between the teams working on the project.

Budget and lead times

A Node.js project is priced on quotation, after scoping that lists precisely the integrations to cover. Production release generally spreads over 21 to 60 days, and up to 60 days for a broader scope with many integrations to handle.

Our method

From idea to launch

Six steps, from the first conversation to launch — and the support that follows. The process is the same for an e-commerce site or a mobile app; only the deliverables change.

01
Scoping and specifications

Scoping and specifications for your project

We start from your objectives, not from a list of features. Scope, key user journeys, technical constraints and budget: everything is set down in writing before the first line of code. You know what you will get, when, and at what price.

02
UX / UI designs

UX / UI designs approved before development

You see your site or your app before it exists. We design every screen, test the user journeys and refine until navigation feels obvious. An interface approved at the design stage means development work that never goes to waste.

03
Custom development

Development with the right technology

WordPress or WooCommerce for a site you manage yourself, Next.js for a platform, Flutter or Swift for a mobile app: the technology follows your need, never the other way round. We ship regular test builds so you can follow progress in real conditions.

04
Testing and acceptance

Real-world testing and acceptance

Every build is tested on the browsers and devices your customers actually use: screen sizes, OS versions, unstable connections. We fix issues before your users run into them, not after they report them.

05
Go-live

Go-live and launch

We handle the launch end to end: hosting, domain name, redirects in the case of a redesign, analytics tools — and store publication when the project is an app. Nothing is left on your plate on launch day.

06
Maintenance and new features

Maintenance, updates and new features

A website, like an app, keeps evolving: security updates, version upgrades, new features as your feedback comes in. An optional annual plan covers monitoring and support work, and the code belongs to you in every case.

Frequently asked questions

Node.js agency FAQ

The questions company directors ask us most often before launching an API or back-end project in Node.js.

01How much does a Node.js API or back end cost?

The budget depends on the scope: number of functions exposed, connections to existing systems, volume of exchanges to handle and level of security required. A simple mobile API, connected to a single database, costs markedly less than a back end synchronising five business tools with different data formats. Every Node.js project is priced on quotation, once your integrations have been listed precisely, before a single line of code is written for your project.

02How long does it take to develop a Node.js back end?

A standard API takes 21 to 60 days between technical scoping and production release; a project with many integrations to existing systems calls for closer to 60 days. That time covers development, load and security testing, as well as a progressive deployment rather than a risky single switchover. When the back end has to feed a mobile application and a website in parallel, we coordinate the schedules of the teams involved so that a delay on one front does not block the other.

03Node.js or another language for my back end?

Node.js suits the vast majority of the web and mobile projects we run, especially when your interfaces are already in React or Next.js: the same language flows from front to back, which simplifies development and maintenance. Another language becomes preferable for work that is very intensive in pure computation, which remains rare in the API or business-tool synchronisation projects we support. We assess this point from the scoping stage, according to the actual nature of the processing your project expects.

04Can you take over an existing Node.js API?

Yes, we regularly take over APIs developed by another team. The initial audit covers the code, the dependencies used, their maintenance status and the security of the access already in place, often the most fragile point on an API taken over from a previous provider. This step separates what can be kept from what has to be reworked before adding new functions. We then hand you an action plan ranked by priority, so you know where every euro invested goes before committing.

05Who manages back-end maintenance once it is in production?

An optional annual maintenance package can be put in place after production release, priced according to the actual scope of your API: dependency updates, availability monitoring, fixes and small developments. A back end that feeds several applications at once deserves regular follow-up, because an outage there often affects all your tools at the same time rather than just one. This package is never compulsory: the code remains entirely your property from production release onwards, whatever you choose afterwards.

06Does the back-end code belong to us?

Yes. Code repository, server and hosting access, technical documentation: everything belongs to you from delivery onwards, with no dependency clause towards our agency. For an infrastructure feeding several applications at once, this independence matters particularly, since it lets you develop or audit your back end with any technical team afterwards, without depending on us in the long run nor on a single developer who alone would know how the system works.

07Does a Node.js back end have an effect on my search visibility?

A back end is never read directly by search engines, but it conditions the speed of the site that rests on it: a well-built API reduces the response times of a Next.js or React site, a criterion Google takes into account in its ranking. It also makes it possible to keep the content displayed up to date automatically, with no manual re-entry, which limits outdated pages and expired product sheets. Search visibility remains carried by the front end, but a reliable back end is one of its conditions, not a secondary detail.
